Shu (ripe) Pu-erh tea is a rich, fermented tea from China, known for its dark infusion and smooth, earthy flavour. Unlike Sheng Pu-erh, which matures naturally over a long period of time, Shu Pu-erh undergoes an accelerated, controlled fermentation process. This gives the tea its characteristic depth while maintaining a pleasantly smooth character.
Leaf: Copper to brown in colour, medium-sized, tightly twisted, with tips.
Cup: Dark, with a rich brown-red colour.
Character: Smooth, earthy and full-bodied, yet pleasantly mild.
The history of Pu-erh tea in China dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Over the centuries, it has become valued not only as an everyday drink but also as a tea suitable for long-term storage and ageing. Particularly valuable Pu-erh teas are still collected today, with well-aged examples sometimes becoming true rarities.
